Monaco is the country with the second-highest population density, and highest per capita millionaires, Monaco is the playground of the rich and famous. If you can’t keep up with the Joneses and stay here for a few nights and spend a fortune, then stay nearby in France or Italy and come over for the day. Monaco has more than enough attractions to keep you busy for the day!

Monaco is also one of Europe’s three Princedoms or Principalities. The other two are Andorra and Liechtenstein.

Monaco is the world’s second-most densely populated and second smallest country.

The top attraction of Monaco is Monte Carlo, which officially refers to an administrative area of the Principality of Monaco. Monte Carlo is known as one of “Monaco’s neighbourhoods” and is best described as “Monaco’s most populous quartier”. Located on an escarpment at the base of the Maritime Alps, Monte Carlo has views over Port Hercules, Monaco’s deep-water port.

With a panoramic view over Monaco-Ville, the official capital (also known as Le Rocher) and harbour, it is clear why Monaco is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, rivalled by Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, Vancouver and Hong Kong.

Walk around the city to get a feel for its boundless glitz. The glamorous atmosphere is augmented by expensive cars, luxury shops, and stylishly dressed people. Avenue de la Costa is lined with luxury boutiques, and so are the elegant Boulevard des Moulins and Boulevard Princesse Charlotte.

While Monaco had gambling tables since 1856, nationals are still forbidden from entry. There is a lot more to the city than just gambling.

Other than shopping, highlights include the Palais du Prince, home to Monaco’s monarchs (the House of Grimaldi). Built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, the State Apartments of the palace are open for visits. If you are lucky you may get a glimpse of Prince Albert II and his South African wife, Charlene the Princess of Monaco. The change of the guards’ ceremony takes place in front of the palace at 11:55 am every day. Arrive early to secure a good spot for the performance.

Among the most beautiful buildings in the city are the Opéra de Monte-Carlo (Salle Garnier) and the Roman-Byzantine-style cathedral with the tombs of Royalty of Monaco, including Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. The Monte Carlo Casino, completed in 1863, is a prominent feature of the city, and a beautiful building.

Located almost 90 metres above sea level on a sheer cliff overlooking the sea, is the impressive Musée Oceanographique. This living museum is home to over 6,000 specimens in their faithfully reconstructed natural habitat.

It’s one hundred or so pools, ranging in size from 100 to 450,000 litres, showcase thousands of fish specimens, over 200 species of invertebrates, and about one hundred species of hard and soft corals. From the La Terrasse Restaurant on the roof terrace, you can enjoy incredible views over the city and the sea.
