We count down 9 places to visit in 2019. Why these? Because these countries either have weak currencies right now or are changing very fast – or both. If you hold some of the major currencies such as the USD and even the Euro and British Pound, you will find the following countries are great bargains right now.
Get your schedule out and plan your next trips!
In addition to weak currencies, our world is changing fast. Things you can see now will be gone soon. Places with few tourists now will be overcrowded in a few months or years. Take advantage now while there are great opportunities.
1. The Glaciers – Anywhere!
Glaciers are truly fascinating, and what makes them increasingly special is the overwhelming evidence that they are melting away at an alarming rate. In some locations such as Alaska, signboards indicate how the glaciers have receded over the past 30 or 40 years. Now is the time to go and explore the world’s glaciers before it is too late!
Among the most impressive glaciers, in terms of size and colour, are those in Alaska and in Argentina’s Patagonia region. Among the largest are the glaciers in Greenland and Iceland. Among the most remote are those in Greenland and Pakistan. In Svalbard, you can climb through a hole in the snow to enter by ladder and rope to the depths of the subterranean glacial rivers under the glaciers. Magnificent glaciers are also found in Canada, Chile, Peru, New Zealand, Nepal, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, India, Tibet, and Antarctica.
2. Argentina
The Argentina currency, the Peso, has nosedived over the last few months and if it remains weak, it makes Argentina the ideal place to visit in 2019. Measuring a whopping 3,650 kilometres (2,268 miles) from north to south, the country is filled with attractions.
In the far north lie the red desert areas around the town of Salta and along the borders with Bolivia and Chile. To the east is the stunning Iguazú Falls along its border with Brazil. Central Argentina is known for the wineries of Mendoza, and the great city of Buenos Aires (BA). South of BA is
Southern Argentina has over 300 glaciers, many of them in the Los Glaciares National Park, home to the Perito Moreno Glacier, the Upsala Glacier, and many more. Nestled among forests and mountains it is a sight to behold. In the far south is the world’s most southern town of Ushuaia. Viva Argentina!
3. Brazil
The Brazilian currency, the Real, is also much weaker than a few years ago which makes Brazil a must-visit in 2019.
Start 2019 at the annual Carnival that will be held in several cities. Rio de Janeiro’s parades will be held from March 1st with the Champions Parade on March 9th. The Carnival is also celebrated with parades in other cities such as Salvador, Barranquilla, and elsewhere on a smaller scale.
Beyond the Carnivals, Brazil offers the Iguazú Falls along its border with Argentina, the charming city of Rio de Janeiro with all its famous sites, the Amazon Rain Forests, the Pantanal Tropical Wetlands, and many coastal towns such as Salvador – Brazil’s former colonial capital. Beaches and islands abound!
4. Russia
Another scenic country with a weak currency is Russia. The Rouble nosedived in 2014 and has only slightly recovered. Before its possible recovery, now is a good time to explore this vast country.
If exploring Siberia or the Kamchatka Peninsula is too challenging, travel around Russia’s west. The cities of St. Petersburg, Veliky Novgorod, and Moscow have enough beauty to keep visitors busy for weeks. Don’t miss a ballet or opera in the newly renovated Moscow Bolshoi Theatre. Bring your warmest clothes and explore the snow-covered domes of the “Golden Ring” region east of Moscow.
5. Indonesia
Joining the club of low-performing currencies is the Indonesian Rupiah that has been on a downturn since 2011. This makes Indonesia one of the cheapest Southeast Asia countries to travel.
Known as the Emerald of the Equator, and spanning over 1.9 million square kilometres, the Indonesian archipelago has over 17,500 islands ready to be explored. Known for its active volcanoes, deserted beaches, palm-fringed islands, colourful tribes, remote villages, ancient ruins, and wildlife in dense jungles, 2019 is the year to explore Indonesia!
6. India
The Indian Rupee has also been on a downturn since 2011 and is one of the worst performers of 2018. While India has always been a budget-friendly country, it is now even more affordable.
Whether you like the tropical south with its millions of palm trees, beautiful beaches, and tea plantations, or the mountainous north, you will find India to be one of the most rewarding destinations. Foodies and culture seekers will be enthralled by India. Remember, India also is home to the Taj Mahal and the Holy City of Varanasi.
7. Turkey
One of 2018’s worst-performing currencies is the Turkish Lira, which at times seems as if it is falling into a bottomless pit (along with the Argentina Peso). This has made Turkey a bargain destination for travellers in search of history and adventure.
Turkey is one of those countries where you could spend many weeks and still not get enough. Constantinople (now Istanbul) is one of the world’s oldest inhabited cities and a delight to explore. Turkey is well known for its many ancient ruins, incredible rock formations, beaches, and more.
8. Japan
Japan did not make the list due to a weak currency, unfortunately. Japan is on the bucket-list because this is where it always belongs. Japan is unquestionably one of the most exciting countries to visit.
When planning a Japan trip, the dilemma is not where, but when to go. Anywhere in Japan is worth a visit! Japan is the ultimate winter-wonderland with beautiful hot springs and incredible food. Autumn or spring is good if you are into brilliant colours! Don’t miss Hokkaido Island (far north), and Okinawa Islands (far south).
9. North Korea
Currency is not an issue in North Korea as foreigners are generally not allowed to use the local North Korean Won. Only hard currencies such as the US dollar and the Euro are accepted by Kim Jong Un. Not a place for the politically sensitive among us, though the adventure spirited will have an unforgettable time.
Though not a cheap destination, and a highly controlled “by tour only” experience, it may change your life! North Korea has an uncertain future so better visit now before it transforms dramatically. Read the 10 facts to know before travelling to North Korea.
